Sword Art Online (First Impressions)

In Sword Art Online, the game plays you. Huh. I think I used that line in a research paper for school…

Sword Art Online is produced by Aniplex and A-1 Pictures, which is adapted from the light novel written by Reki Kawahara (who also wrote Accel World, which is concurrently airing). In the year 2022, the ultimate virtual environment using VR technology known as NerveGear has been perfected with the release of the titular MMORPG. Our protagonist, Kazuto Kirigaya (also known as Kirito), who played the beta test version of SAO, is one of 10,000 players who owns the game. Upon logging in, he teaches the basics to one of the new players named Klein. However, they both find that there’s no option to logout on their menu. All of a sudden, all of the players are teleported to the main area where they are greeted by Akihiko Kayaba, the creator of both SAO and NerveGear, who explains that the lack of a logout function is actually not a defect, and they can’t have their NerveGear removed or shut down or else it’ll fry the player’s brain, thus ending his/her life. Even worse, if the player dies in the game, they die in real life too. The only way to escape is if they complete the game by reaching the 100th floor of Aincrad and defeat the final boss. With that in mind, Kirito immediately heads off, only seeking to grow strong enough to survive. Easier said than done as only in the first month since the game’s launch, 2,000 players have already been killed and the first floor hasn’t even been cleared yet…

This show is pretty much my highly anticipated series of this summer and the opening episode certainly has lived up to my expectations. There was no way I was gonna let my… current dissatisfaction with Accel World stop me from checking out this show. This is already shaping up to be better than Accel World. Definitely will continue watching.
