This is it, Eureka Seven: Astral Ocean. Right now, you’re treading on thin ice. If you can pull of a decent final two episodes, I will even forgive your godawful OVA episode.
The opening has a slight change. Usually where it shows Renton from his backside, this time he turns around like “Hey, dudes. I’m here to save your series.” Anyway, the episode begins with everything falling into complete disarray due to Truth’s attack. The Secret isn’t gone after all, but has fully assimilated as Georg.
Meanwhile, Team Pied Piper are fighting Truth and Naru, who apparently didn’t switch back to the side of good after all. The enemy team make a getaway, while the Great Poseidon and Triton arrives. Ivica tells Ao that Naru, as well as himself, may be in danger and Ao goes after them.
While Truth is muttering World History from 1096 to 1945 to himself, Naru takes him to the nearby Coral Plant to fuse him with the Scub Coral. However, Truth rejects it and disables the Nirvash spec2, saying that he only desires the time where Okinawa doesn’t declare independence from Japan, and where neither Scub Corals nor Secrets exist. Truth attacks again, this time being held back by Liu and Lerato while telling Ao to fire at them. But Truth rips them both to shreds and takes the Quartz Gun and uses it on himself.
Ao now finds himself in a new timeline. The Nirvash Mark I looks completely different, Truth doesn’t exist, the Allied Forces stole the Canon and used to with Naru’s activist group to fight the Secrets, but Ao apparently destroyed it. So um… series over?
So while Ao pieces together what was rewritten by the Quartz Gun, he sees a Pole Light and something come out of it. It’s Renton, piloting the Nirvash TypeZERO Spec3, and he comes to destroy the Okinawan Coral Plant. The Quartz that materializes is absorbed into the Quartz Gun. Renton jumps onto the Nirvash Mark I, which he calls Nirvash Neo, and opens its cockpit, trying to figure out why Eureka isn’t piloting it. Speaking of which, Eureka has phased into this time and Renton asks Ao to take him to her.
Before she phases out, Eureka tells Renton that Ao has what’s he looking for. Episode 23 ends with Renton introducing himself to Team Pied Piper. Episode 24, the final episode, opens with Ao trying to get a punch in on Renton, but Ivica stops him. Renton explains the anthrophic principle. Apparently, Secrets are intelligent beings and acquired the means to travel through universes using Quartz. Eureka did the same when she came into contact with the quartz, warping between dimensions.
So it’s not just time travel at work here…
Now we get to Iwato Jima; Renton explains that only less than a day has passed since he sent Eureka to the current world, but to Ao, it’s been 10 years.
While father and son play Soccer, Renton explains that they found out that the Scubs were travelling to the past, just like how Eureka and the Gekko. The Secrets were created for the sole purpose of pursuing and destroying the Corals. Their conflict was why Scub Bursts happened. In Renton’s future, mankind is near extinct because Secrects registered humans as threats. Also, there are two Nirvashs in that time. Renton’s spec3 and Eureka’s spec2. They were the only two left fighting the Secrets, until Renton sent Eureka to another world with low Trapar density while he destroys the Scubs.
So because Renton and Eureka protected the Scub Corals, Scub Bursts are happening. He leaves to go back to his future and takes the Quartz Gun with him. After Toshio tells him something that is yet to be revealed, Ao jumps into the Nirvash Neo to pursue Renton.
Renton plans to use the Quartz Gun to destroy the very first Scub Coral, thus wiping out all others from existence. All of a sudden, Ao hears a familiar voice.
In this timeline, Truth is the Nirvash Neo’s Archetype,nd Renton’s not too happy about that.
As it turns out, Toshio told Ao about his sister. Three months after her birth, she died because the high-Trapar environment in the Eureka Seven Earth makes it uninhabitable for her, Ao, and Corals. Which is why Eureka came to the current world. Ao takes back the Quartz Gun and heads straight for the Pole Light.
So using that anthrophic principle thing, Ao time travels to 10 years ago, before the Scub Burst that takes Eureka. Apparently, this Eureka is the Eureka that he met earlier in the series. And that wrecked Nirvash? That’s apparently Ao.
So the Quartz Gun absorbs all the Quartz, powering it to maximum, and Ao fires it, sending Renton and Eureka back into their own world, but this time it creates a universe where he doesn’t exist.
So in other words, Ao just erased this entire series, save himself, out of existence. Goddammit, Bones. This is how you redeem the series?
Final Thoughts: Maybe Eureka Seven was just fine by itself. No sequels, no alternate universes, nothing.
