So the Dandy crew is flat broke for turning in measly aliens and only getting so little woolongs, so Scarlet suggests they capture a Chameleonian, a legendary alien with the ability to shapeshift into anything. It’s reward amount is 100 million woolongs. So they decide to hit the road to a planet that looks like it has chameleons.
They go fishing for Chameleonians, unaware of the fact that they are called as such not because they resemble chameleons, but their ability to shapeshift. However, QT does catch a tsuchinoko, and realizes that fishing’s pretty fun. Along the way, she catches a black tsuchinoko and Dandy catches a Chameleonian… which, after taking it to the ARB, is actually just a regular chameleon.
The next morning, the Dandy crew wakes up to find some of their items recently used, and the black tsuchinoko QT caught gone.
It turns out that the black tsuchinoko is actually a Chameleonian. And so begins a wild chase on board the Aloha Oe to catch the Chameleonian. When the Chameleonian impersonates Dandy, QT and Meow decide to play a game of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?-style Spot the Impostor to make the real Space Dandy please stand up.
Both Dandys are evenly matched which causes the game to go into a stalemate. Due to its constant shapeshifting, the Chameleonian’s true form in unknown, even to itself. Which leads Dandy to question whether he is a Chameleonian as well, but eventually shrugs it off. Meanwhile, Dr. Gel has invented a new weapon for capturing Dandy.
He actually catches the Chameleonian, which changes into Gel, and makes him question whether he is a Chameleonian.
And thus is the purpose of the Chameleonian. It blends itself into our lives without us noticing. Who knows, maybe a Chameleonian is the one typing this. The people around you could be a Chameleonian. Perhaps you too are a Chameleonian…
