Space Dandy #20: Behind the Music: The Dropkix

Screenshot - 8_23_2014 , 11_42_02 AMThis is the story about how a random group of people formed a band and went from being nobody to legends. And all it took was just one song.

Meet Johnny Yong Bosch, the young supreme commander of the Jaicro Empire Unbeknownst to his own empire, he has dreams of his own: to become the greatest rock star in the galaxy.

Uh, Dandy. Parsecs measure distance, not time.

After a brief bathroom brawl with Dandy, they bond rather quickly and decide to start a band. However, they have aggressive disagreements over what to name the band, what promotional items, the color of their t-shirts, etc. At Honey’s suggestion, the name of their band eventually become “The Dropkix” since Dandy and Johnny have a tendency to dropkick each other. With their first gig scheduled, they still have yet to write a song.

Space Dandy sure does enjoy referencing its Galaga. Every 7th episode in both seasons has has some form of Galaga reference. In fact, the Galaga version Meow is playing here is a Japan-only mobile version of Galaga called Space Galaga.

Johnny handles the songwriting, or rather waits for a song to descend from above, one of them being the theme from Galaga, the other being the Flea Waltz.  However, on the day before their debut gig, Johnny does come up with a song and have the Dandy crew practice it in such short time. On the day of their gig, only a few show up in the audience and The Dropkix play the same song for two hours straight. But it was more than enough for them to be noticed across the galaxy and make their big debut at the Space Budokan on July 7.

However, the Jaicro Empire’s assault on the Gogol Empire’s secret weapon falls on that same day. So, Johnny is left with a harsh choice: Attack the Gogol Empire? Or attend their big debut at Space Budokan? War or Gig? Gig or War? Johnny decides to drop the gig for the war, leaving Dandy and the others to handle the concert,

This is honestly my favorite episode of Season 2 thus far, almost up there with the multiverse episode. Johnny was an awesome one-shot character. Even if there is just one song made, I’d pay for a Dropkix single.
