It’s the start of the Fall season, which I was looking forward to more than the previous season, and what better way than to watch two brand new Gundam series, one of them from the man who started it all himself.
Gundam Reconguista in G, a Sunrise original, is set in Regild Century Year 1014, a millennium after the Universal Century was abolished, and mobile suit creation are now prohibited. Earth is now connected to space via the orbital elevator Capital Tower. The story follows Bellri Zenam, a cadet in the elevator’s protector, the Capital Guard. One day during a training exercise, the Capital Tower falls under attack by space pirates. One of them, a woman named Aida Rayhunton, pilots a mobile suit of unknown origin known as G-Self. Although Bellri successfully captures the G-Self, along with Aida, he finds himself being able to operate it, despite the G-Self only responding to Aida. With it, Bellri will eventually unravel the truth behind the space pirates and the Regild Century as a whole.
Since the year started, I’ve been mostly letdown by all but one of this year’s mecha anime offerings so far, but first two episodes into Reconguista in G and seems to not be one of those letdowns. In fact, it’s pretty much one of the better ones already. It seems to be invoking the things I like about the old-school Gundam series, which is always good, so now I do have a good mecha anime to look forward to watching.
