Parasyte -the maxim- // First Impressions

Screenshot - 10_8_2014 , 1_17_52 PMMadhouse, this is your last chance, because your record of anime this year is 0-3. Magical Warfare was a miss. No Game, No Life was a miss. Mahouka, don’t even get me started on that steaming pile of garbage. You need this one. May Heaven help you if you somehow manage to blow this.

Parasyte -the maxim- (Kiseiju), a Madhouse adaptation of Hitoshi Iwaake’s manga, follows 17-year old Shinichi Izumi as he lives in a quiet neighborhood in Tokyo where parasitic, worm-like aliens descend to Earth and start taking over hosts by going into their brains. One of them enters Shinichi through his right hand, which allows him and the parasite, which Shinichi names Migi, into a sort of symbiotic relationship, which gives them an edge over other parasites that have taken over other hosts.

Already in the first episode, Parasyte has outdone all of Madhouse’s other shows this year. And let’s be honest: they have been churning out some real crap this year. Which is probably why I’ve had my expectations low on this one. In all fairness, this one had one of the better first episodes of this season and makes me want to look forward to more. Perhaps Madhouse’s path to their redemption begins with Parasyte.
