*sigh* It’s just not a new anime season without just one anime involving a bunch of teens playing online vidya games. Am I the only one getting tired of this? But, wait! Phantasy Star Online 2 the Animation isn’t the only one this season. We got TWO of ’em this season.
Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash, an A-1 Pictures (*grumble*) adaptation of Ao Jumonji’s light novel, is set in the video game-like world of Grimgar, where Haruhiro and his friends unknowingly find themselves inside, with no memory of the real world, or certain real-life aspects. In order to survive, the group forms a party of Volunteer Soldiers as they work to earn a living.
You can blame the fact that the “you’re trapped in the video game world” plot has been done to death so many times in the past few years that there is nothing about it that’s original. Grimgar is just meh. It has only a slight but questionable advantage in that the cast doesn’t know that they’re in the game. The aesthetics are pretty mice to look at, but the characters and the story aren’t the greatest thing ever. The problem is this had came too little, too late for me to not think of it anything other than a discount Log Horizon. I think I might just wait until a few more episodes air for it to warm up to me.
