Joker Game, a Production I.G adaptation of Koji Yanagi’s novel, is set in Autumn of 1937, on the eve of World War II. The story follows the D Agency, a clandestine spy training and intelligence agency established by Lieutenant Colonel Yuuki of the Imperial Japanese Army. The D Agency recruits and trains civilians unrelated to the military to perform covert black ops throughout Japan and other countries against their enemies, whether they be domestic or foreign.
So it’s safe to say that Joker Game has one of the most intriguing premises this season. I don’t think we’ve seen enough spy thriller anime as of recently, which makes this all the more interesting to watch. But at the same time, it does cover some rather sensitive real-life events, which it could hopefully tread carefully around, but aside from that, I’m curious to see where this one goes.
