Yuri!!! on Ice // First Impressions

screenshot-10_11_2016-6_53_18-pmBefore I begin, let me just point out that despite the title, this anime has absolutely no ice-skating lesbians. I’m sorry that you got your hopes up for some yuri on ice, but it ain’t happening here. Maybe some other anime will give us that…

Yuri!!! on Ice, an original anime by Mappa, follows Yuuri Katsuki, a young man who at one point carried all of Japan’s hopes and dreams on his shoulders at the Figure Skating Grand Prix competition, only to choke at the finals. After upstart Russian figure skater Yuri Plisetsky tells him to give up and go home, he returns home to Kyushu a year later, unsure whether he should retire. After a video recording of Yuuri’s private performance goes viral, the five-time consecutive world champion, Viktor Nikiforov, appears at Yuuri’s house, wanting to train him in preparation for the next Grand Prix.

Sayo Yamamoto, the director of Yuri!!! on Ice, has been a director that I’ve been keeping an eye on ever since watching Episode 20 of Space Dandy (she also directed Episode 2, but most of her influence comes from that one the most), and Michiko & Hatchin. She was also involved in Endless Night, the Japan Animator Expo short that inspired Yuri!!! on Ice. With all of that, this became yet another show I was looking forward to, and and honestly I think this could be the show to look at this season. It didn’t blow me away, but it left an extremely good impression on me. This one is definitely a keeper.
