Blue Exorcist: Kyoto Saga // First Impressions

screenshot-1_6_2017-10_19_35-pmBlue Exorcist: Kyoto Saga follows after Episode 17 of the 2011 anime/Chapter 15 of the manga. In the aftermath of his fight with Amaimon, Rin finds his friends in a state of unease and distrust after learning he is a spawn of Satan. While Rin trains to control his blue flames, he and his friends are assigned to travel to the True Cross Academy’s Kyoto branch in order to investigate the attempted theft of the eyes of the Impure King.

Well, Blue Exorcist: Kyoto Saga assumes you’ve watched the 2011 series (or read the manga) up to the point it starts because it jumps you right into it with no recap. And it ignores everything after Episode 17. Which is good, because those anime-original episodes SUCKED!!! Anyway, the first episode was a fairly nice setup to the arc, even though the Kyoto Saga anime is mainly for those that were left burned by the 2011 anime, like myself, whom is hoping that Blue Exorcist can hopefully redeem itself from Hell.

Blue Exorcist: Kyoto Saga is licensed by Aniplex of America and is available to watch on Crunchyroll and Daisuki.

Gurren Lagann premieres on Toonami this weekend, Blue Exorcist Re-Review

tengen_toppa_gurren-lagann_211317As you know, this weekend on Toonami, Gurren Lagann, a Studio Gainax original series, will premiere, replacing Blue Exorcist. And that means Toonami finally has a mecha series besides Sym-Bionic Titan. In fact, Gurren Lagann is widely considered to be one of the most finest mecha anime to come out of Japan in recent memory, I think.

Speaking of Blue Exorcist: Remember when I said it will be Aniplex’s make-up for giving Toonami Sword Art Online? Yeah, I was wrong. Gurren Lagann‘s making up for both of those pieces of crap. How did I not notice these issues with the Blue Exorcist anime back in 2011?

I pretty much welcomed Blue Exorcist with open arms after that gross, misogynistic harem scum Sword Art Online was put out of its misery, but now after watching it again a few years later, I realized that this anime is pretty freaking bad. The first half of the show was decent at the least, but the second half is full of character derailments, dumb asspulls, and utterly stupid writing all over the place, a few episodes of which were just SAO-level of idiocy (“Oh, Rin’s the son of Satan, we need him to control his flames. But those flames hurt people, so fuck you, we inexplicably hate you now.”), and a completely infuriatingly anticlimatic ending. Soul Eater‘s anime-original episode were better written than this, so this has absolutely no excuse. Really, they turn into a blue phoenix and send Satan back to Hell? This was pretty much a very piss-poor adaptation and you’d be better off reading the manga instead or hoping they Brotherhood it, and forgetting this terrible adaptation even existed. Go to Hell, Blue Exorcist. [Final Score: 5/10] The movie’s good, though. Way better then the TV anime.

All hope is not lost as Gurren Lagann is coming to bring a swift end to Aniplex’s track record of bad Toonami show selections. Third time’s the charm, indeed.

Toonami November News Recap

The Clydes are back! Oh, and we got some new stuff coming soon.

Coming January // Naruto Shippuden
Naruto Shippuden will be airing on Toonami this January on the same night as Space Dandy. As for Naruto, November 30 will be its final night. The staff said they can’t afford to keep both Naruto and Shippuden.

December 7 // AKIRA
NEO-TOKYO IS ABOUT TO E.X.P.L.O.D.E.! And so is Toonami when it airs AKIRA, the groundbreaking film based on Katsuhiro Otomo’s manga. Just recently this month, FUNimation released the 25th Anniversary DVD/BD Edition, which contains both the 1988 Streamline dub and the 2001 Pioneer dub. It’s confirmed that they’ll show the latter dub in HD.

December 14 // Summer Wars
This original film directed by Mamoru Hosoda is actually one of my favorite anime films. I’ve been hinking that this movie could work. If you liked the second Digimon Adventure movie which was the second part of the American movie), you’ll like Summer Wars. They basically share the same premise: Supervirus takes over the internet, people fight it.

December 21// Fullmetal Alchemist: The Conqueror of Shamballa
On the weekend before Christmas, they’ll be showing the movie which concludes the first Fullmetal Alchemist anime. This one I’m not too crazy about since it’s not the movie related to Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, but they did say that they wanted Shamballa to air first, but they did say that the other one isn’t out of the question.

December 28 // Trigun: Badlands Rumble
Yep, the Trigun movie is finally airing on [adult swim]. If you remember correctly, Trigun ran on [adult swim] a long while ago, and had an episode air on the April Fools 2012 Toonami. Just a little heads-up: The English voice cast, sans Vash, is different from the series.. But it’s mostly just a movie-length episode of the TV series

Coming March // Blue Exorcist
A-1 Pictures’ 25-episode adaptation of Kazue Kato’s manga is coming to Toonami by Aniplex USA. No word on whether it’ll be premiering after Soul Eater, Sword Art Online or FLCL‘s second run. Good choice for Toonami. Personally, I would’ve preferred Gurren Lagann, but this is good. If I recall correctly, this was the highest requested Aniplex USA show for Toonami. Well, this’ll be their statement of apology for Sword Art Online.

Excited? I know I am.
