2016 Anime Year in Review

You know, maybe 2016 wasn't so bad after all. The Cubs did win the World Series this year. Back to the Future Part 2 was off by a year and a couple weeks. Close enough, I guess?

On second thought,. 2016 was a fucking dumpster fire of a year and no amount of booze can make the pain go away.

Anime 2015 was a fairly decent year, but it came off the heels of a garbage year for anime. 2016 seems so much better now. I’d say 2016 was the antithesis of 2014. 2014 was a fairly good year for most media, but anime that year was garbage. 2016; fairly good year for anime, but a dumpster fire of a year, mostly because of all the celebrity deaths. We should’ve seen it coming when David Bowie and Alan Rickman passed away.

But, y’know, Leonardo DiCaprio did win his first Oscar, and the Cubs did win the World Series for the first time in 108 years, so I guess 2016 wasn’t 100% a dumpster fire. Continue reading

Seasonal Anime Reviews: Winter 2016

Yeah, a .hack/Sword Art Online crossover. Because the true king of MMO gaming anime needs to return to put this usurper in his place.

Seasonal Thoughts: Man, this season’s kinda… eeeeeh. I was right when I said to expect a subpar Winter from a craptastic Fall 2015. I was only really entertained by a few shows. And nope, I didn’t like Erased as much as you wanted me to; I’ll just save you the disappointment. I mostly spent time watching stuff on Toonami and in my backlog, and getting a handle on Bayonetta in Smash. Man, whatever happened to the really good Winter from last year? Was that just a fluke? The fact is that we’ve had four less than subpar anime seasons in a row, which hasn’t happened since Fall ’13 until Summer ’14, and that’s worrisome. About as worrisome as the likelihood that the Ben Affleck-directed Batman movie could get axed. But, don’t worry. There is a light at the end of the tunnel. I think the quality of next season will determine the remainder of the year. Not sure about The Batman, though. Well, at least there’s LEGO Batman.

So Deadpool was fun from start to finish. Fun enough for me to forget Fant4stic was a thing. Enough said about that. But seriously, Hollywood? Just because Deadpool was a big success doesn’t mean we should start making every superhero movie R-Rated. It only worked because Deadpool couldn’t work the way it did it was PG-13.

On a more exciting note: Symphogear seasons 4 and 5, baby, YEAH!

On a not-exciting note, freakin’ movies for Sword Art Online and Mahouka, two of 2014’s biggest piles of hot garbage; which means, once again, Aniplex (and A-1, in the case of SAO) has ahold of your dicks. I’ll go into that at a later date, but I’ll just save you the trouble of those movies:

  • In the SAO movie, the bad guy’s a rapist, because Kawahara only follows one rule when it comes to writing bad guys and it’s “all bad guys are rapists.” Heck, I won’t be surprised if the Accel World movie has a rapey guy too, because why the hell not?
  • The Mahouka movie will consist of Crystal Dragon Jesus Donald Trump Onii-sama doing bloody everything, including turn water into wine, and his sister who’s waiting to dryhump him the first chance she gets.

There, that’s money and time saved for something worthwhile.

Divine Gate // First Impressions

Screenshot - 1_8_2016 , 11_13_52 AMLike I said before, there’s anime to look forward to and anime to not look forward to. And then there are shows that are so amazingly terribly executed that it wears that shit on its sleeve, kinda like Chaos Dragon last year. This is one of those shows.

Divine Gate, a Studio Pierrot adaptation of the mobile game by Acquire  is set in the near future where this world, the underworld, and the heavens converged together after the eponymous gate opened and it caused the world to fall into a state of chaos. In order to restore order to the world, the World Council was founded to train Adapters, youths that were gifted abilities over the six elements. The story follows Aoto, as he partners up with Akane and Midori, as they work together to find the Divine Gate and remake the world.

If I can decide in 5 minutes that there’s something that I seriously don’t like about the show, then it’s probably not a good idea for me to watch it. That turns out to be the main character Aoto himself, who is probably so angsty and emo, that there’s no way I can take him seriously at all when he says stuff like “the rain can never fill the holes within my heart.” and puts ice cubes in his food because he was never fed warmed food. I’m totally not kidding; That’s exactly what he does. I think Aoto is supposed to cater to the hardcore teenage crowd, the kind of demographic that thinks grimdark and edgy garbage like Akame ga Kill! is good. Aside from that, the rest of the show isn’t any better. We basically have a crazy guy take a woman hostage on a train and immediately infodumps the exposition to her while she’s terrified out of her panties. Wow! I am literally astounded by how terrible this first episode is. Divine Gate is certainly something that exists this season.
