2016 Anime Year in Review

You know, maybe 2016 wasn't so bad after all. The Cubs did win the World Series this year. Back to the Future Part 2 was off by a year and a couple weeks. Close enough, I guess?

On second thought,. 2016 was a fucking dumpster fire of a year and no amount of booze can make the pain go away.

Anime 2015 was a fairly decent year, but it came off the heels of a garbage year for anime. 2016 seems so much better now. I’d say 2016 was the antithesis of 2014. 2014 was a fairly good year for most media, but anime that year was garbage. 2016; fairly good year for anime, but a dumpster fire of a year, mostly because of all the celebrity deaths. We should’ve seen it coming when David Bowie and Alan Rickman passed away.

But, y’know, Leonardo DiCaprio did win his first Oscar, and the Cubs did win the World Series for the first time in 108 years, so I guess 2016 wasn’t 100% a dumpster fire. Continue reading

Seasonal Anime Reviews: Summer 2016

v-a7f-k-rfuglnibktkxquysfcgodrilxhdfxtczui8Seasonal Thoughts: Man, this season was kind of a chore. Honestly, I was about ready to skip this season. Basically a standard Summer anime season.

Y’all spent eight months expecting the new Ghostbusters film to be terrible only for it to actually not be terrible. Turns out the real thing you should’ve been pointing fingers at was Sony’s shitty marketing. As for Suicide Squad, I guess it wasn’t the movie that will save the DC Extended Universe from critics and reviews after all. I guess it’s up to Wonder Woman. If it bombs with the reviewers, this movieverse is screwed. And don’t even get me started on The Killing Joke! I thought I could trust WB Animation with this, but they add some pointless scene with Batman and Batgirl having sex and… URGH!!!

You know what? Go watch Kubo and the Two Strings instead. Oh, and Thunderbolt Fantasy. Watch that too.

Meanwhile in theatres on the opposite side of the globe: I had no intention to watch the Accel World movie, but… Honestly, you can’t even call it a movie, considering it’s actually a 40-minute recap of the TV series and a 40-minute OVA falsely advertised as a full-length movie, therefore ripping off moviegoers expecting to watch a movie. I should be pointing fingers at Sunrise, but, considering that this was penned by Kawahara himself, that can probably mean he must’ve wrote 40 minutes worth of story… If this doesn’t prove that Kawahara has your dick, I don’t know what does.

So I guess August 18, 2016 will be a day that will live in anime infamy as the day a LOT of hopes and dreams of Ash winning a Pokemon League were crushed… Oh, and I guess Bleach ended, or rather it got cancelled… and good riddance! Honestly, everything after Chapter 423/Episode 342 are nothing but Tite Kubo’s drunken fantasies. Continue reading

Ace Attorney // First Impressions

Screenshot - 4_2_2016 , 8_03_21 AMLet’s be real: Video game-to-anime adaptations are usually a hit-or-miss. Let us hope this next one won’t be as objectionable as some of the bad ones out there.

Ace Attorney, an A-1 Pictures adaptation of the Game Boy Advance (later ported to Nintendo DS) video game by Capcom, follows Phoenix Wright {Ryuichi Naruhodou}, a rookie defense attorney under the tutelage of Mia Fey {Chihiro Ayasato}. Along with Mia’s sister, a spirit medium-in-training named Maya {Mayoi}, Phoenix will use all the evidence he has available to him and some logical (and some illogical) thinking to find the true culprit and prove his clients’ innocence in court.

As you know, I have two objections. The first being A-1 Pictures; One of, if not the most incompetent animation companies. I’ve lost the ability to trust them with anything; They blow this and they’re gonna earn a permanent spot on my shitlist (assuming they haven’t already). And yeah, they’re defineitly not gonna be blowing anyone away with these mid-2000’s visuals that are trying but failing to be like you’re playing the video game. The second being Yuuki Kaji’s prepubescent sounding-ass voice coming out of the mouth of a 24-year old man. Can you imagine that? I most certainly can’t. It’s not as terrible-sounding as I imagined, but, what was wrong with getting Takayuki Kondo back?  Aside from that, I did like what I’ve seen somewhat. Here’s hoping Ace Attorney can shake up the curse of bad video game adaptations.

Gyakuten Saiban Live-Action Film Trailer released

Goddamn, this looks so effin awesome. Sure, it looks even more ridiculous in live-action, but that’s what makes Ace Attorney what it is.
