2016 Anime Year in Review

You know, maybe 2016 wasn't so bad after all. The Cubs did win the World Series this year. Back to the Future Part 2 was off by a year and a couple weeks. Close enough, I guess?

On second thought,. 2016 was a fucking dumpster fire of a year and no amount of booze can make the pain go away.

Anime 2015 was a fairly decent year, but it came off the heels of a garbage year for anime. 2016 seems so much better now. I’d say 2016 was the antithesis of 2014. 2014 was a fairly good year for most media, but anime that year was garbage. 2016; fairly good year for anime, but a dumpster fire of a year, mostly because of all the celebrity deaths. We should’ve seen it coming when David Bowie and Alan Rickman passed away.

But, y’know, Leonardo DiCaprio did win his first Oscar, and the Cubs did win the World Series for the first time in 108 years, so I guess 2016 wasn’t 100% a dumpster fire. Continue reading

Seasonal Anime Reviews: Winter 2016

Yeah, a .hack/Sword Art Online crossover. Because the true king of MMO gaming anime needs to return to put this usurper in his place.

Seasonal Thoughts: Man, this season’s kinda… eeeeeh. I was right when I said to expect a subpar Winter from a craptastic Fall 2015. I was only really entertained by a few shows. And nope, I didn’t like Erased as much as you wanted me to; I’ll just save you the disappointment. I mostly spent time watching stuff on Toonami and in my backlog, and getting a handle on Bayonetta in Smash. Man, whatever happened to the really good Winter from last year? Was that just a fluke? The fact is that we’ve had four less than subpar anime seasons in a row, which hasn’t happened since Fall ’13 until Summer ’14, and that’s worrisome. About as worrisome as the likelihood that the Ben Affleck-directed Batman movie could get axed. But, don’t worry. There is a light at the end of the tunnel. I think the quality of next season will determine the remainder of the year. Not sure about The Batman, though. Well, at least there’s LEGO Batman.

So Deadpool was fun from start to finish. Fun enough for me to forget Fant4stic was a thing. Enough said about that. But seriously, Hollywood? Just because Deadpool was a big success doesn’t mean we should start making every superhero movie R-Rated. It only worked because Deadpool couldn’t work the way it did it was PG-13.

On a more exciting note: Symphogear seasons 4 and 5, baby, YEAH!

On a not-exciting note, freakin’ movies for Sword Art Online and Mahouka, two of 2014’s biggest piles of hot garbage; which means, once again, Aniplex (and A-1, in the case of SAO) has ahold of your dicks. I’ll go into that at a later date, but I’ll just save you the trouble of those movies:

  • In the SAO movie, the bad guy’s a rapist, because Kawahara only follows one rule when it comes to writing bad guys and it’s “all bad guys are rapists.” Heck, I won’t be surprised if the Accel World movie has a rapey guy too, because why the hell not?
  • The Mahouka movie will consist of Crystal Dragon Jesus Donald Trump Onii-sama doing bloody everything, including turn water into wine, and his sister who’s waiting to dryhump him the first chance she gets.

There, that’s money and time saved for something worthwhile.

Snow White with the Red Hair (Part 2) // First Impressions

Screenshot - 2_8_2016 , 1_51_20 PMIt’s winter, so it’s bloody cold outside. So you better stay warm with a bit of anime. I suggest the kind that warms your heart, such as the second part of Snow White with the Red Hair, which starts with Shirayuki, after becoming a licensed court herbalist, having fallen for Zen and finally kissing the boy (better late than never, I suppose), being called back to her homeland of Tanbarun via a personal invitation sent from Prince Raj himself.

Yeah, remember Raj, the spineless prince that tried to poison Shirayuki in the first episode with apples. Did you know apples are the food of assholes, by the way? *takes a single bite out of an apple* …What? Anyhoo, Snow White is just as enjoyable as it were, so not much else here for me to say. *throws apple in the trash can*

Snow White with the Red Hair (Part 2) gets 4 bug-infested enel herbs out of 5

Seasonal Anime Reviews: Summer 2015

IwataBananasWhen you realize you’ll never see Satoru Iwata holding bananas again.

Uh, excuse me one moment.

Ok, I’m done.

Seasonal Thoughts: This season had all three of the current trends that I cannot stand in anime: the “OW THE EDGE” anime, the “Humanity Fights For Survival” anime, and the “You’re trapped in the video game” anime. And what’d you expect, I disliked all three of them. Honestly, even though this season is an improvement over Spring (and last year Summer), this season was just decent, but could not pass the bar set by Winter. Yeah, Winter is best season of 2015.

August was kinda a shitty month for movies aside from Straight Outta Compton and Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’, I suppose. How the heck did Fox go from fixing X-Men to fucking up Fantastic Four? I mean I haven’t seen it myself (I almost did), but the 8% on Rotten Tomatoes speaks for itself. It made the previous three Fantastic Four movies look better in comparison. Yeah, bet you didn’t know there was a Fantastic Four film that came 11 years before Fox’s first go at it. Although I’m sure they can’t blow Deadpool even more than the time they sewed his mouth shut. At least Ant-Man was good, but like Avengers: Age of Ultron, it was overshadowed by excitement for Captain America: Civil War.

Snow White with the Red Hair // First Impressions

Screenshot - 7_7_2015 , 12_50_24 PMSnow White isn’t a fairytale that particularly interest me much, but I hear this one is good, so let’s check it out.

Snow White with the Red Hair, a Bones adaptation of Sorata Akizuki’s manga, follows Shirayuki, a young woman who works with medicine, who is notable in her country of Tanbarun for her unusual bright red hair. When the Prince of Tanbarun, Raj, requests Shirayuki to be her concubine, she decides to leave the country with a young man named Zen Wistalia, who is actually a prince of one of the neighboring lands.

Well, we got ourselves a good one this season, and I’ve said that often since this season’s anime had some good openers, (Except for Chaos Dragon and Overlord), but with Snow White with the Red Hair, I’m sure of that claim. This show could essentially be Disney princess movie made into anime, and I get the feeling that I’m gonna end up liking this one.
